Including gardens on castors
Frida – the mobile raised bed with a social mission and mobility from Blickle
In a world that is becoming increasingly fast-paced and digital, many people long for a place of tranquillity, closeness to nature and genuine encounters. The Artefact carpentry workshop in Dresden has created just such a special space with its accessible raised bed ‘Frida’. Children, senior citizens, people with disabilities or patients in therapeutic facilities will not only find soil and plants here – they will also find connection and a sense of belonging. Reliable mobility is needed to ensure that this unique idea can unfold its full potential in everyday life. Blickle has ensured that Frida can be moved safely and easily with carefully selected castors.
The challenge: mobility for encounter and inclusion
The idea for the inclusive raised bed arose as part of Sylvi Schiller's final thesis during her studies to become an academic expert in garden therapy in Austria. The goal: to make gardening activities accessible to everyone. Together with her husband Jan Beyer and his carpentry workshop Artefact, the original prototype Flora eventually became the series model Frida. Frida is much more than a raised bed – it is an important contribution to inclusion. The partially wheelchair-accessible stainless steel plant tray allows wheelchair users to have direct contact with the soil, while the ergonomic height adjustment allows everyone to garden at eye level without straining their backs. But being special also means having special requirements: the castors had to be extremely gentle on the ground so as not to leave marks on a wide variety of surfaces, and they had to be easy to manoeuvre, even for older or disabled people, with a smooth, almost effortless roll. At the same time, the raised bed must be stable and secure when in use.
The solution: technology meets passion
Blickle has found the perfect balance for Frida. The LKPA-PATH 101KF series swivel castors, combined with matching fixed castors, offer an exceptional combination of lightness and robustness. The soft yet durable tread glides smoothly and leaves no marks on sensitive floors. The double ball bearing and the stable centre bolt in the housing ensure easy manoeuvring. The permanently integrated ‘stop-fix’ brake provides security whenever the raised bed needs to be kept in place. At the same time, the castors are resistant to frequently used cleaning agents and disinfectants – another important contribution to hygiene in care facilities. Close cooperation with Blickle and comprehensive advice made it possible to find the optimal solution for all sizes of Frida, combining quality, safety and comfort in a unique way.
A raised bed that moves – in the truest sense of the word
Thanks to the Blickle castors, the mobile raised bed becomes a flexible and safe place to meet, enjoy nature and have fun. For the Artefact joinery, the result is a great success: with Frida, they have not only created a high-quality product, but also an experience that appeals to the body, mind and soul. At the Saxony Innovation Award 2025, the barrier-free Frida raised bed was awarded the special prize of the Saxony Chambers of Crafts. In a competition category that specifically honours extraordinary ideas and forward-looking solutions from the craft sector, Frida impressed with its coherent overall concept. Presented by the Saxon State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labour, Energy and Climate Protection, this prize is one of the most prestigious awards for innovative craft businesses in the Free State.
